I have heard this poem several times over the years, but it is really nice to be able to sit here and read it.

This is a wonderful glimpse into the heart and mind of a woodland owner, and into our forestry legacy and commitment here in Oregon.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 291px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KZwU5zxAB7o/TtVLRdivT2I/AAAAAAAAAOg/EswBUpILArg/s320/Bob%2BMealey.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680529268357943138" />

When You're So Old
by Robert H. Mealey 1910-2007
Mr. Ponderosa, Friend and Mentor

My friends quite often ask of me,
Why does an old man plant a tree?
It grows so slow it will not pay,
A profit for him anyway.
Then why in storm and winter cold,
Do you plant a tree when you're so old?

The answer seems hard to define,
When muscles ache and they are mine!
But I just cannot stand to see,
A place where there should be a tree.
So that in part as years unfold,
Is why I plant when I'm so old.

I know that animals, bugs and things,
Love trees and so do such as go on wings.
So creatures wild that benefit,
Is one more reason I can't quit,
From planting trees while I can hold,
My planting hoe though I'm so old.

They say that those retired from labor,
Should fish and play and talk to neighbor.
They say also that folks in leisure,
Should do the things that give them pleasure.
And so the thought on which I'm sold,
I'll plant a tree though I'm so old.

As times goes on my trees will grow,
So tall and clean and row on row.
The furry folk will have a home.
The birds can nest and kids can roam.
And all of this as I have told,
I planted trees though I'm so old.

And then there is my family,
Young folks who will follow me.
I'd like to leave them with some land,
Stocked with trees and looking grand.
These gifts I value more than gold,
So I'll plant a tree though I'm so old.

And taxes too for schools and roads,
With jobs and lumber for abodes.
I won't see these things, I won't be here,
But in my mind it’s very clear.
The words of some who could be polled,
Might thank a man who is so old.

Man should be proud of what's his own,
And how he's managed what he's grown.
But management must be begun,
By planting seedlings one by one.
And so my pride I shall uphold,
I'll plant some trees though I'm so old.

So when my friends ask of me,
Why does an old man plant a tree?
Perhaps the lines above explain,
How aching back and limbs in pain,
May by commitment be controlled,
To plant a tree though I'm so old.

Upcoming Event: Arts in the Woods

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b-k13eOr6t4/TsqJBQwvR9I/AAAAAAAAAOU/zBvjim63tGU/s320/Benton121511.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677500935026198482" />
Join us for a special WOWnet event December 15th on OSU's Corvallis campus.

The Works Project Act instituted by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930’s employed many artists to provide beautiful and practical additions to public works. Aimee Spencer Gorham, nationally known for her skill in wood marquetry was employed by
the WPA in Oregon. Her decorative wood work can be found at Timberline Lodge, in the Portland Public Schools and at Oregon State University.

Art conservator Nina Olsson will talk about Aimee Gorham and her work from an historical perspective. A demonstration of wood marquetry by Michael McCallister using this technique which he currently employs will also be feature. We spent a few hours with several gentlemen on the logging crew, as well as the lead Silviculturist of the forest. We then came back and discussed the process of logging and marketing logs.

It was a wonderful opportunity to demystify what can seem like quite and overwhelming process. It was also a terrific opportunity to see how much skill and care goes into harvesting trees for lumber. Those loggers have a plan for each and every tree: which will become telephone poles, which might end up becoming window trim in your home, which will be used to build things, and which will be chipped into plywood, paper, and all the other various uses of our wood products.
<img style="float:left; My own great grandmother was married at 13. My mother was the first woman in her family to attend college (and she later got her PhD).

Yet so many girls and women are still vulnerable, still do not have rights, even in the United States. Just last week the US Department of Agriculture reached a settlement for prior discrimination against women and hispanic farmers. We have a WOWnet precisely because all women do not feel accepted as forest managers, yet. We have gone far, but still have some work to do.

The work we do in WOWnet is simple. We organize, we share our skills, knowledge and experiences with each other. We empower each other to become confident decision makers about forest management. We join and become part of the greater forestry community, raising awareness and gaining respect among the people with whom we interact. Hopefully this will continue to spread and grow among our community until WOWnet is no longer needed.

The situations in other countries, among other demographics, are more complicated, and in a sense there is more at stake, but the basic principles are the same. Give girls or women access to education, a peer group, basic necessities (like safety, sufficient food and critical medical care), and the ability to earn money, and those girls will be less likely to be sold into prostitution, contract HIV, or be murdered as a result of domestic abuse.

I was given a book over the holidays, "Half the Sky", which chronicles much of the travesty which is life for girls and women in poverty: from higher infant mortality due to available food and medicine going to boys, to sex trafficking at a very young age, to gender mutilation and domestic violence/murder. This book also demonstrates successful projects aimed at empowering these women, changing the view of women within communities. Learn more about the book here: http://halftheskymovement.org/

In World Bicycle Relief, for example, they will give a family a bicycle so that a daughter can go safely to and from school. The family can use that bike as they wish on weekends and before/after school. If the girl stops going to school, the bike is taken back. A bike in many countries is way out of reach, and allows you to increase your income by 100%. A $134.00 bike serves as an incentive to keep daughters in school, as well as improve an entire family's well-being.

Another wonderful project is The Girl Effect: http://thegirleffect.org/

Ultimately, I am reminded today that WOWnet is bigger than having workshops, learning how to run chainsaws. We are changing a mindset. I am also reminded to keep a bigger picture in mind, and continue to find ways to help those who need us.

A quote from "Half the Sky"by Nicholas D. Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn

"In the nineteenth century, the central moral challenge was slavery. In the twentieth century, it was a battle against totalitarianism. We believe that this century the paramount moral challenge will be the struggle for gender equality around the world."

Feb 12th - Different Management for Different Sites

Please click on image to get more details for this upcoming meeting in the Salem area. That number didn’t seem right to me, but looking back on my calendars, yes indeed, we held our first gathering of Women Owning Woodlands in a chilly forest cabin on the McDonald Dunn forest outside of Corvallis, Oregon, in December of 2005. Since that first meeting, we have grown to include almost 300 women in Oregon! We have also provided inspiration to the OSU Small Farms Extension program, not to mention women in Minnesota, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, and the entire Delaware Watershed Basin! And those are only people I have spoken with directly.

Some of you have provided support and leadership since the beginning, many of you have shared your stories, your experiences, and your woodlands with us, but many of you have just joined our community, so I thought it might be nice to revisit our WOWnet origins, as well as reflect on some of what I have learned with you in the last five years.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3NiIe2QnUno/TS4PHTffh8I/AAAAAAAAAEw/b1WHj8BxI_s/s320/IMG_0788.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561399208015005634" />
In 2004 I came to Oregon to work for OSU Extension as a forestry and wildlife educator. It did not take long to notice that women, although physically present at forestry events, were not always engaged. I was not alone in noticing this. Several studies came out in the years immediately following WOWnet’s initiation, showing that across the United States, more women were becoming primary managers/owners of farms and forests, yet often lacked the social capital, knowledge, and access to resources that allow them to be successful.

An Oregon Family Forest Landowner Survey conducted in 2005 estimated that women were primary managers of 40% of Oregon’s family forests, but only comprised 20-25% of education participants and 10% of professional association membership (Cloughesy 2005). A study of forestland owner offspring conducted for the National Association of State Foresters showed that 83% of women sampled were interested in managing their family forestland when transfer occurred, but only 34% felt they had enough knowledge to make forest management decisions (Mater 2005). And most recently, according to the USDA 2007 Agriculture Census, women who own or manage forests and farms tend to have smaller parcels, lower average sales, and are less likely to attend educational events or be aware of assistance opportunities (Dougherty and Hilt 2009). These factors lead to an increased risk of economic failure for these women, many times resulting in sale and conversion of working forests and farms to other uses, (such as residential or commercial development).

In 2005, I started working with a steering committee of women woodland managers to develop the Women Owning Woodlands Network (WOWnet). We decided that this Extension program would: a) recognize the growing number of women taking a wide array of active woodland management roles, b) raise basic forestry and decision-making skill levels among women woodland managers through hands-on educational opportunities, c) support and increase women’s access to forestry-related resources, and d) encourage communication among Oregon’s women woodland managers through the development of statewide and local networks.

In these five years, I have had the opportunity to spend time with many of you, whether via email, on the phone, or walking around your property. I began compiling data from a recent survey you were asked to complete, and found myself asking the question: “Who are WOWnet women?”, “What do they get from this?” and “What should WOWnet be doing?” Here is what I have come up with so far.

WOWnet Women are Busy
The first indicator to me that WOWnet members are incredibly busy was the fact that only 34 of the 284 member listserv took the on-line survey. Another indicator was the response to the best time to meet. 61% preferred Saturday meetings, 58% preferred a weekday afternoon (Thursday being the most popular day). There never seems to be a perfect time to get together, due to many of you holding full time jobs, raising children, working on your own properties, or being involved in several other forestry and community groups outside of WOWnet.

WOWnet Women are Inquisitive…. About EVERYTHING
When asked what you wanted to learn more about, I received close to 40 topics! I have broken these down into seasons, inside or outside topics, and categories. This might help us prioritize upcoming events. 41% of you have attended more that 5 sessions, as well as attended other forestry education events, like Tree School, Oregon Small Woodland Association (OSWA) events, or other OSU Extension workshops. (click on table to enlarge)
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 226px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3NiIe2QnUno/TS4OUt1B5hI/AAAAAAAAAEo/aGUtVwJz6D4/s320/priorities.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561398338911331858" />

WOWnet Women Do Not Fit in a Box
WOWnet members are between 15 and 85 years old, owning between 1 and 3000 acres of woodlands that serve the gamut of objectives: a sanctuary, a place to live, a place to raise a family, a way to financially support a family. Some of you have owned land for less than a year, some of you are 4th generation forest managers (and some of us will be future landowners).

WOWnet Women like Meeting Each Other
Of all the ways to communicate, in-person meetings were most useful for WOWnet members. Next came mail and email messages, then newspapers, and at the bottom blogs and social network tools. I still have hope that this blog will become more useful over time.

What WOWnet Does and what WOWnet Could be Doing
WOWnet seems to be a doing good getting women on board, and connected with other women and resources. We also are achieving our goal of recognizing women as woodland managers. This is evidenced by endless requests for newsletter and journal articles, reports, and to speak at conferences. We have been highlighted by the US Forest Service, US Department of Agriculture, OSU College of Forestry, Oregon Forest Resources Institute, and many other institutions and agencies.

Some of you think we could offer more technical courses. I have been hesitant to offer classes that are already offered in other venues, but I agree that we could bump up our formal education at times, without sacrificing the important sharing and spontaneous learning that comes from participatory informal education technique. Lastly, if WOWnet is going to continue to grow and thrive, we need renewed leadership from within the local groups. There are 300 members and 1 (20% of a full time job) WOWnet coordinator, so we need energy and leadership from within.

We have had a tremendous five years, and I look forward to continuing this important work, up until the time we all decide that it is no longer necessary, that time when women woodland and farm managers have a voice and a place at the policy, industry, conservation, and decision making tables.

Here's to a Happy and Productive 2011!
Nicole

Different Management for Different Sites

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3NiIe2QnUno/TNbuodFE1LI/AAAAAAAAAEc/Y7Q2HQrWSR8/s320/Salem+120410.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536875170666697906" />

This is going to be a great field tour, we are going to discuss steps to plan management activities, how to select the right species/objectives for different sites, and check out a brand new pond! This is an old farm, having been in the family about 130 years. You will hear a little history,
see a lot of very active management, and perhaps pick up an idea or two for your property.

We will tour recent projects on the farm such as a 2010 ten-acre reforestation project—on a forgotten plot—left to the “boomers” for more than 60 years. Other areas will feature a shaded fuel fire break project—that removes ladder fuels—and aims to calm any potential fires between Heritage and the federally owned Bureau of Land Management land. Merrily, like many other woodland owners—has some Doug fir Christmas trees that have promise as future timber—you will have a chance to see how machine mulching was used to create this conversion.

Thinking of putting in a culvert on your property? Learn from Merrily’s research on this project. And, there will be something else—it has to do with Wiley Coyote and the 100-year old blackberry patch.

Please RSVP @ chrissy.lucas@oregonstate.edu. Bring a sack lunch—beverages will be provided. Dress for the weather—this will be a boots on the ground event.

Benton Birding Re-Cap

<img style="float:left; Buying safety equipment that fits property is CRITICAL. Ayala shares a recent experience.....

I went down to Roberts Supply in Spfld to get geared up for chainsaw safety, bought a great helmet with screen and earmuffs, and Kevlar chaps.

About those chaps-- the guy asks me 'What size?'
Well... he was about my height so I said, 'Whatever you wear'-- so that's what he handed me. A nice red too, my favorite color--

So I got home and tried 'em on... AND MY LEGS WERE ALL EXPOSED FROM THE SHINS ON DOWN!!! Huh!! 'Way too short! Capris and chainsaws? I don't think so...

One thing I hadn't factored in: his waist was down THERE, while mine is UP HERE... it's that girl/guy shape thing.

They kindly took them back and handed me off the longer ones, for an additional $7. AND assembled the helmet for me, it was a Chinese death puzzle PLUS you need thumbs of iron to snap those earmuffs on. Many secrets not clear in the instrux sheet!

Orienteering Clinic July 16th!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3NiIe2QnUno/SlOMGt06TwI/AAAAAAAAAAs/dU9jjjEq7ys/s320/Lane+071609.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355778428882276098" />
Ladies!

Sorry for the last minute announcement, but we will be hosting an Orienteering Clinic at the Mohawk Valley Grange this July 16, from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm. One mystery shrub looked like the manazanita we have over in Bend, but not quite right. A quick look at "Wildflowers of the Western Cascades" by Ross, Chambers and Stevenson (which I am sure you can find at your local bookstore), showed that was indeed a manzanita. Hairy Manzanita (Arctostaphylos columbiana) of the Ericacea family (also Salal, Huckleberry) this plant is native to the coast range, from BC down to northern California.

Find out more here:

http://plants.usda.gov/plantguide/doc/pg_arco3.doc

http://www.pnwflowers.com/flower/arctostaphylos-columbiana

Tree Planting

This Spring, Clackamas County MWM and WOWnet member Sena Sanguinetti hosted a tree planting session.
